From intention to action

Make the next action obvious.
Make finishing worth noticing.

Knowing a task matters can still leave you stuck at the start. Next Thing puts the task, the person responsible, and the reward for finishing where you can see them.

1 / CUE

See the task

Put a concrete action on the daily board. Name the person who will do it.

2 / ACTION

Start small

Create tasks you can act on: write the opening paragraph, put away five items, practice one technique.

3 / FEEDBACK

Count the finish

Mark work complete and see the points attached to that task added to the profile.

4 / REWARD

Choose what matters

Set rewards and wish lists that mean something to the person doing the work.

Try the task-to-points loop

Try a quick win

Less staring at the list.
More checking it off.

Start with one small task. Finish it, see your progress, and move to the next. Give it a try right here.

Interactive example. These tasks and points stay on this page.

01 / REWARD

A reason to finish

Points connect a completed job to a reward you chose.

Dopamine & reward processing

Dopamine participates in brain pathways involved in reward, learning, and motivation. Research in adults with ADHD has found differences in dopamine reward pathways. That helps explain the interest in rewards; it does not mean every person with ADHD has the same motivation needs.

In Next Thing: points and chosen rewards give completed tasks a visible consequence.

02 / FEEDBACK

Let the finish count

Tap complete. See the points added to your profile.

Feedback & reinforcement

Studies in children with ADHD have found that reinforcement can improve performance on some tasks. Results depend on the person, task, and reward. Points are useful only when the person values what they lead to.

In Next Thing: task completion updates points, while your group decides what rewards to offer and when to deliver them.

03 / REMINDERS

Keep the next step in sight

Put a small, specific action on the board and return to it after an interruption.

Working memory & getting started

ADHD can make organizing and finishing tasks difficult. NIMH recommends practical supports such as consistent routines, written reminders, and breaking large tasks into smaller steps.

In Next Thing: use the board as an external reminder. Write a manageable action, assign it, and return to it after an interruption.

04 / CHOICE

Make the reward personal

Choose something the person doing the work actually wants.

Choice & shared responsibility

A reward that matters to one person may mean little to another. Agree on the task and the reward together. Keep expectations clear and adjust the setup as you learn what works for your group.

In Next Thing: individual profiles, wish lists, and customizable rewards make room for those differences.

These studies explain the design rationale, not results from testing Next Thing. The app has not been clinically evaluated for ADHD and does not measure or claim to increase dopamine. It is an organization tool, not an ADHD treatment.
